Guangzhou Marathon 2025: A Gold Label Race in the Heart of the City
Event Overview
The 2025 Guangzhou Marathon will take place on Sunday, December 21, 2025, starting from Tianhe Sports Center. Covering the full 42.195 km distance, it has been recognized for years as a World Athletics Gold Label Race, making it one of the most prestigious road races in Asia.
The scenic course runs along both banks of the Pearl River, passing Guangzhou landmarks such as the Canton Tower, Liede Bridge, and Pazhou Exhibition Center, blending the thrill of competition with the beauty of the city.
How Can Foreign Runners Join the Race?
1. Registration
- Opening Time: Registration has not yet started. Keep an eye on the official Guangzhou Marathon website and verified WeChat/Weibo accounts for updates.
- Eligibility: Participants must be 20 years or older (born before Dec 31, 2004) and provide proof of finishing a full or half marathon within the required time frame. Note: Online race results are usually not accepted.
2. Lottery & Direct Entry
Since applications exceed available spots (around 26,000 runners), a lottery system is used. If winners don’t pay on time, a second lottery may open.
- Direct Entry may be granted to loyal runners (who joined multiple years) or elite athletes (meeting specific performance standards).
3. Support for Foreign Runners
- Use the official English registration page (when available).
- Prepare translated proof of previous race results or medical certificates if needed.
- Even if you don’t win a spot, you may still join as a volunteer or cheer squad member, enjoying the festive atmosphere.
Pre-Race Preparation
- Training Plan: Start training at least 3 months ahead, focusing on endurance, pacing, and nutrition.
- Health Check: A medical exam is strongly recommended.
- Accommodation & Transport: Stay in Tianhe District or Zhujiang New Town for easy metro access to the start line.
- Gear & Supplies: Bring weather-appropriate running gear. The race bib will include a timing chip.

- On-Course Services: Multiple aid stations provide water, sports drinks, medical spray, sponges, and snacks. Post-race, runners enjoy Cantonese-style snacks, milk, and recovery wipes.

- 1st Place: $40,000 (with time requirement)
- 2nd Place: $20,000
- 3rd Place: $10,000
- 4th–8th place also receive prize money.
